The city-state with navigation as its main economic branch, was connencted with the most distinguished European cities, particularly those on the Mediterranean. It was aslo the hometown of eminent scientists, writers, artists from the mediaeval to the Enlightenment periods (Kotuljevic, Drzic, Getaldic, Gundulic, Boskovic).

Following democratic changes in 1990, the indications of prosperity were drastically stopped by the war against Croatia. Dubrovnik and its surroundings were occupied and devastaed considerably from the Serbian-Montenegrin agression. Today, the city celebrates its beauty and freedom again. The geographical position is typical Mediterranean, with mild and damp winters and hot summers (2,600 sunny hours).

Off the shores of Dubrovnik the Elafiti islands set harmoniously in lush subtropical greenery face the city. The island considered to be the most beautiful is Lokrum, situated just opposite the city. There is a great variety of flora, dominated by cypress, pines, olive groves, vineyards, lemon and orange plantations, aromatic plants and flowers, palm trees, agaves and cacti.
